Aztec Atro

(Macroptilium atropurpureum)

Rust resistant Siratro

Aztec Atro is a perennial tropical legume, developed as a result of research conducted by the CSIRO.

Aztec Atro is a versatile legume with a deep and well developed root system and spreading by creeping stems. It will develop on hillsides and is less demanding in its nutrient requirements than glycine or lucerne.

Aztec Atro is ideal for pasture mixtures where its persistence and response to warm conditions will provide a bulk of feed. It demonstrates superior growth and vigour in the cooler months when rust occurrence on Siratro can be high. (This rust resistance alone can lead to 25% higher production over Siratro.)

Rainfall and soil suitability.

Aztec Atro requires a warm, moist tropical and sub tropical climate. It may be sown with confidence in areas receiving more than 750mm of annual rainfall. It can persist however on softwood scrub soils in areas with rainfall below this. Aztec Atro prefers well drained soils.

Summary

  • superior growth and vigour over Siratro in cooler months.
  • Seeds prolifically
  • Significant increase in drymatter production over Siratro
  • Rust Resistant!
